چکیده

The genus Volvox is comprised of several species of communal multcellular chlorophytes which exhibit a series of interesting morphogenetic events during their developmental cycle. In Volvox carteri, the inversion event is interesting in that after several rounds of cell division from a single cell, the glycoprotein lled, spheroidal plakea completely inverts itself thorough of series of highly coordinated genetic, kinetic and mechanical interactions[4, 3, 7, 5]. This dramatic coming of age of the adult colony is beginning to be understood from a developmental viewpoint, with descriptive data on the phenomena for both wild-type and mutants, as well as the distribution of relevant gene products now available. Herein, I examine the experimental data, and propose a mathematical model to describe this process, taking into consideration both the chemical kinetics and the tissue mechanics of the colony. The resulting system of coupled equations is solved in an approximated geometry of the mature gonidia, using the nite element method (FEM). Results are compared with the observed data, as well as exact solutions for idealized parametrization.

Elasticity and glocality: initiation of embryonic inversion in Volvox.

Elastic objects across a wide range of scales deform under local changes of their intrinsic properties, yet the shapes are glocal, set by a complicated balance between local properties and global geometric constraints. Here, we explore this interplay during the inversion process of the green alga Volvox, whose embryos must turn themselves inside out to complete their development. This process h...

Mechanics and Variability of Cell Sheet Folding in the Embryonic Inversion of $Volvox$

Many embryonic deformations during development are the global result of local cell shape changes and other local active cell sheet deformations. Morphogenesis does not only therefore rely on the ability of the tissue to produce these active deformations, but also on the ability to regulate them in such a way as to overcome the intrinsic variability of and geometric constraints on the tissue. He...

Finite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy

The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...

A Study of Na/K Feldspar Solid Solution Using Statistical Mechanics

Thermal behavior of various solid feldspars are different, namely those of bivalent cations show no change in the distribution of Al and Si atoms, whereas feldspars of univalent cations become more disordered with raising temperature. In the latter case Al atoms migrate from the sites they occupe at low temperatures and interchange positions with the Si atoms. At high temperatures (but stil...

Fractional Order Generalized Thermoelastic Functionally Graded Solid with Variable Material Properties

In this work, a new mathematical model of thermoelasticity theory has been considered in the context of a new consideration of heat conduction with fractional order theory. A functionally graded isotropic unbounded medium is considered subjected to a periodically varying heat source in the context of space-time non-local generalization of three-phase-lag thermoelastic model and Green-Naghdi mod...
